  1. Pick-up from your accommodation.

A day in Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Siam, where the history and the way of life run into each other. This day trip combines a van and a boat to see the best of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The morning begins with a comfortable drive to Bang Pa-In Palace, the royal summer residence.

Built in the 17th century, it combines Thai, Chinese and European architecture, with beautifully kept gardens and a quiet lake.

Then Wat Yai Chaimongkol, a 14th-century Buddhist temple known for its 62-metre chedi and a large Buddha image, and for how peaceful it is.

Do not miss the famous Reclining Buddha and the great pagoda, both of which say something about how grand Ayutthaya once was.

Lunch by the river at a local restaurant: proper Thai cooking and a quiet view.

In the afternoon, two more important temples. First Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the royal temple of Ayutthaya, known for the three large chedis that hold the relics of former kings. Then Wat Mahathat, where a Buddha head is held in the roots of a fig tree — a striking image of history being taken back by nature.

The day ends with a gentle river cruise and the ruins from a different angle. Late in the afternoon we head back to Bangkok.

  2. A safe ride back to your accommodation.
